Mormons Sow the Wind, Reap the Whirlwind

A lot of Mormon church money went behind funding the "Yes on Prop 8" movement. Now, there is a backlash forming - specifically, petitions to strip the Mormon Church of its tax exempt status for political lobbying. You can sign the petition here.

The Mormons weren't the only ones campaigning for Prop 8.

But the real irony is, Mormons were championing a deceitful, hateful movement to strip a minority of its rights.

If Proposition 8 stands legally, it essentially establishes the precedent that anyone who can get 50% of the vote can strip any minority group of their rights.

So the Mormons, being another misunderstood minority, are in a delicious bind. If they really believe in the principals of Proposition 8 - they are essentially supporting their own demise, since if California rules Proposition 8 legal, that sets the legal precedent that California's constitution allows that Mormon's rights or Catholics rights or blacks rights can be just as easily taken away by an angry mob.

Think I exaggerate? The California supreme court said that gays are subject to the same level of equal protection as religions or race or sex. So if voters can pass Proposition 8 and it's legal, then it's also legal in California for 50% of the voters to ban Mormonism, ban women from entering the workforce, make the eating of pork punishable by death, or make black marriages illegal.

The wonderful irony? If the Mormons don't want their rights taken away, their only hope now is that the courts rule Proposition 8 illegal.
