Why Sarah Palin's Daughter's Pregnancy Is An Issue

Wow - this story has suddenly created a firestorm today. Apparently Sarah Palin's 17-year-old unmarried daughter is pregnant.

Obama issues a stern statement to leave the family out of this. And he's right, this is trash politics on the level of Reverand Wright. I'm heartened to see him distance himself from this so firmly.

But is this an issue because, as posters to CommonMistakes have said, the "lying about being pregnant with her now five-month old baby" issue is a legitimate issue for Sarah Palin? No. That issue is pretty unfounded.

Is this an issue because Sarah Palin staunchly supports "abstinence only" education and this proves the failure of such out-of-the-mainstream policies? No. Obama is right: people's children especially should be off base.

Is this an issue because it shows that McCain didn't really vet Palin at all and reflects the trouble the McCain camp will have? No. We know she wasn't vetted and this is just one of many things that are coming out.

But this touched a nerve with team McCain. Why? Because this issue has the potential to dampen support from hard-right Christians. And that, my friends, is the only reason Sarah Palin is on the ticket in the first place. So: they are shitting bricks.
